Getting The Right Fit

Figuring out what kind of used car will best suit your needs is the first step toward finding the perfect vehicle for you. It’s no secret there’s a lot to think about, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Wandering around car lots or flipping through ads can waste your time and put you in a car that doesn’t really satiate everything you need a vehicle to do for you. Even worse, you might end up spending more for a used car that doesn’t make you happy. Fortunately, working through a few quick steps can set you on the right path — saving you time, money and helping you find the used vehicle that’s the perfect fit for your life.

We spoke with Sylvester Wright, a sales associate with More Cadillac in Richmond, VA , to find out what dealers know when it comes time to pick up a new-to-you used car. Wright said above all else, it’s important to know your automotive budget.

“First, decide what kind price range you’re looking for,” Wright said. “Knowing what kind of payment you’re comfortable with is important.”

It also pays to remember that new-to-you vehicles carry a host of other expenditures with them. Licensing, title and insurance can add hundreds to the bottom line, so it’s a good idea to leave some wiggle room in your budget. Besides, the more money you have to play around with at the end of the month, the happier you’ll be.

Next, Wright says it’s important to figure out what kind of equipment you’ll need on a day-to-day basis. Can you drive a vehicle equipped with a manual transmission, or will you need an automatic? Does the weather in your area demand an all-wheel or front-wheel drive vehicle? How many seats do you need? All of these play an important role in narrowing down your search.

What you intend to use your used car for also factors into what kind of equipment you’ll need. If you plan on using the vehicle to haul tools or associates for work, you may need something with a big cargo area or plenty of seats. That may mean a bigger engine to pull everything around at the same time. Taking a moment to imagine everything you could possibly use your vehicle for should give you a rough outline of the kind of equipment you’ll need.

At the same time, it’s key to separate your needs from your wants. A family of three can easily get by with a fuel-thrifty sedan, but it might be tempting to reach for a three-row SUV. Keeping an eye on what you genuinely need from your used car should make staying within your budget a breeze.

When it comes to options, it’ll pay to be flexible.

“I wouldn’t worry too much about color,” Wright said. “And you may have to give a little on what options you would like with your vehicle.”

At the same time, Wright says some options are must haves.

“If a customer has back pain and needs seats with lumbar support, we can work with them to get what they need.”

When you finally decide what kind of vehicle will best suit you and your family, getting the right one should be a breeze. There are plenty of internet search options out there, and Wright says most dealers can get you just about anything you ask for within a week or two.

“There are lots of cars out there right now,” Wright said.
