Detroit trip: a bicycle tour of Corktown and Mexican

My findings of Detroit were slowly coming to an end, and I had seen so many places already interesting in my quick trip over the past four days. Just before I was ready to jump across the border to Windsor again, I had an adventure on my agenda: a bicycle tour of southwest Detroit to cover Corktown and Mexican.

After a hearty breakfast at the Inn on Ferry Street took its center Complimentary shuttle to Rivard Plaza, right next to Detroit Riverwalk. At 10 am I met with Kelly Kavanaugh, co-owner ofWheelhouse Detroit, first bike center downtown Detroit, the hiring of more than 30 years. Wheelhouse also offers bike repairs and service and offers a variety of tours of different neighborhoods Detroit.

Wheelhouse Detroit was founded by friends of Kelli Kavanaugh and Karen Gage, two young women who have been active in the nonprofit Detroit and urban planning scene for years. Equipped with advice from other entrepreneurs, start-up funding program of the city of micro-credit savings and embarked on their business venture and bought 30 bikes including cruisers comfortable ride mountain bikes, kids bikes, trailers, and even a tandem.

Their bikes are made by Kona, a philanthropic bent manufacturer who donates bicycles to nonprofit organizations in Africa. Together with other people I've met over the past four days, Kelly and Karen are an example of the new generation of entrepreneurs in Detroit to combine his love for the city hard work and entrepreneurial creativity.

In a bright, but cool and windy October day Kelli and I headed west along the Detroit Riverwalk and quickly became the General Motors Renaissance Center and Hart Plaza, Detroit Civic Center. Detroit International Riverside covers an area extending from the Ambassador Bridge to Belle Isle and includes numerous parks, restaurants, shops, skyscrapers and residential areas along the Detroit River. Hundreds of millions of dollars have emerged in recent years to revitalize this area extensively.

The Detroit Riverwalk is a path of multiple-use recreational extends 5.5 miles (almost 9 km) along the Detroit riverfront and provides separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists and inline skaters. Wheelhouse Detroit is within Rivas Plaza, an outdoor space that has the Carousel Cullen family, a granite inlaid map of the Detroit River, fountains and gardens. Rivard Plaza was opened in June 2007 and also has the Riverwalk Café.

Cycling west along the Paseo del Rio, Kelly began to talk about his company and his passion for cycling in Detroit. As the city is quite widespread and a lot of traffic is concentrated on city property sunken highways, the downtown is surprisingly free of traffic congestion and bicycle use. In my last four days in Detroit are not any traffic jams downtown, an amazing experience when you come from a congested place like Toronto.

As you pedal against the wind passing by landmarks several more Detroit – Cobo Arena, the Center Cobo Convention and the Joe Louis Arena – home of the Detroit Red Wings. Leaving the center of town behind we headed southwest of Detroit.

The first neighborhood we received was Corktown, Detroit's oldest neighborhood, so the name of Irish immigrants in County Cork who settled here. The houses in this area back to 1834 and feature beautifully restored Victorian houses, many of them painted bright. Corktown also has many cool restaurants meeting, including funky Zeitgeist Gallery, a bar called Nemo who was voted # 3 sports bar in the U.S. perfect by Sports Illustrated., Y LJ 's – a place lyrics hip, and a wide range of different restaurants.

We snaked our way through this friendly neighborhood and crossed a railway bridge provides a perfect view of one of the most impressive architectural structures in Detroit, the Michigan Central Depot, also called the Michigan Central Station. Although now abandoned and in disrepair, the Michigan Central Station is a railway station was built in 1913 for the Michigan Central Railroad. Its main station Arts train is flanked by a 18-story office tower, a monumental building whose silhouette dominates the skyline of Southwest Detroit. Due to its size and magnificent architectural structure, the Michigan Central Depot Detroit remains one of the most impressive buildings, despite their current sad state.

After the railway bridge who arrived in Bombay, a bustling neighborhood that has suffered significant economic growth in recent years. Kelly showed me the International Welcome Center Michigan brand new commercial development near the Ambassador Bridge. 85 companies will welcome visitors to the market, and that will serve the local population and outside of Strangers New York alike with a wide assortment of merchandise.

Further west in biking on a long stretch of Mexican restaurants, including popular restaurants, People such as Mexico, El Zocalo, tamales, Evie, Lupita and Xochimilco. A walk through this area revealed an extensive collection of late Victorian houses led by large trees. The main streets in the area are Bagley and Vernor Street are lined with shops and restaurants.

Far from the major arteries and put in the area: Santa Ana De Detroit Catholic Church, the church eighth in this town, whose first stone was laid in 1886. The church was founded on July 26, 1701, two days after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac (the founder of Detroit) and French settlers arrived. Today is the second oldest continuously operating Catholic parish in the United States. Today, the congregation includes many Hispanic parishioners who gather for worship in this impressive Gothic structure.

One stop on our bike tour including Hotel Yorba, which inspired the single band of Detroit garage rock "The White Stripes." Today this old hotel public housing. We started cycling back to the main road and passed through Clark Park, a large public park in southwest Detroit. Cycling in East Vernor saw another piece of Mexican-owned companies.

On the way back we stopped in front of the Michigan Central Station, where Kelly said this is the point basis for the annual Tour de Troit "event, a bike ride of 40 miles from Detroit that has been attracting cycling enthusiasts from the 2001. Both Kelly and her business partner Karen have been actively involved in helping organize this popular cycling event. Increased attendance of 650 participants in 2007 to 1100 participants in 2008. Kelly explained that cycling is definitely off in Detroit. The Tour de Troit event also raises funds for dedicated bike paths.

Now back to Michigan Avenue, one of the main streets of Detroit. We have examined regularly stop at several bars, cafes and galleries that populate stretch of road. One of our last stops was at the Old Tiger Stadium, former home of the baseball team Detroit Tigers. The stadium was opened in 1912 and Unfortunately, partially demolished in 2008. A dedicated group of local citizens fighting to keep the remaining portions of the stadium intact.

Our tour concludes a stroll through downtown business district of Detroit and ended back in the wheelhouse of location Rivas Plaza. Given that I am a avid bike enthusiast myself, Detroit exploring on two wheels was a real highlight of my stay of five days in this city. Bicycling is the best way to discover a city – allowing you a great ground cover to a manageable speed at the same time get the amount necessary exercise. Being able to easily stop anywhere is a great added benefit of an avid travel photographer like me.

Now invigorated I thanked Kelli for introducing me to a whole different side of Detroit and went to lunch outdoors outdoor space in front of the Winter Garden in the Renaissance Center. The Renca "international headquarters of General Motors, is formed by seven high-rises around the 73-story central tower that holds the Detroit Marriott Hotel. This structure has also been the tallest building in Michigan since 1977.

The hotel's top coaching badge, a fine restaurant with the most fabulous views of the city. In 2003 GM renovated the entire complex at a cost of $ 500 million which added the five-story winter garden, a bright glass atrium overlooking the Detroit River. I grabbed my lunch and went out and enjoy the autumn sun and magnificent views over the river from Windsor, while reflecting on my five days full of action in Detroit.

Shortly after the shuttle called the Inn of Ferry Street and minutes later I was beaten away. more I made a final stop in Greektown, Detroit's a popular entertainment districts. Most of the houses along Monroe Street, date back to the Victorian era and now have restaurants and cafes on the main floor. The Greektown Casino is a great attraction in the area.

This morning came the exciting conclusion of my visit to Detroit. Picked my bag, jumped in my car and took the Detroit-Windsor tunnel back to Canada. On the way back to Toronto I reflected on what an exciting and fascinating destination Detroit had been. In recent days I see so many different facets of Detroit, and I had the opportunity to meet several people who are truly passionate about their city. It is always ideal to a city from the perspective of an insider.
I had a great time in Detroit and in the last five days I had seen so many things you never expected. And I realized that there were over so many places that you never saw.

Well, I suppose I must leave something for next time …
