The Garden Shed – Not Just The Male Domain

Typically a simple place to keep garden tools, the humble shed has grown in status over the years.

William Caxton, the English printer first documented the word ‘shed’ in 1481 when he described it as a place for keeping dogs.

As humans are by nature, protective and proud of their possessions, the shed was an ideal place to keep them securely, thus leaving the house for the residential purpose for which it was intended.

In centuries past, homes and sheds were built from any available materials.  These may have included stones, animal skins and mammoth tusks. In Victorian times, the potting shed was introduced.  A place where, along with the storage of tools, the tasks of  potting of plants and sowing of seeds would have been undertaken. These sheds would have been constructed from brick and stone and some at least had windows.

In England, some 20% of the population possesses a shed, finding them a source of nostalgic whimsy as they reminisce of happy times spent with Grandparents as small children.

Over recent years, sheds have been quietly undergoing a rather spectacular makeover and can be found in many sizes and shapes. They have many adopted uses:

As a workshop, they are ideal for working on motorbikes, skateboards, push bikes etc, handy power and very often water supplies are added bonuses.

Budding musicians, having been banished from the house will find the shed environment the ideal place to practice with enthusiasm and without interruption.

A shed makes a superb home office, self contained, warm and cosy.  Perfect to work from when space in the house is at a premium. Just add an office deskchair and some filing cabinets.  The floor can even be carpeted.

For those who like to excercise, a shed can make a super gym.  The equipment will be safely housed and any music played will be contained.  They also serve as fine massage rooms or hairdressing salons for those who operate from home.

Historically being known as the male domain, the ladies too are embracing the shed as a source of refuge, somewhere to relax or escape to.  The perfect retreat.
