Although many works now regarded as a precursor of the genre were published in 1960 and 1970, the term steampunk has emerged in the 1980s as a variant of the tongue in cheek of cyberpunk. He seems to have been invented by the author of science fiction KW Jeter, who was trying to find a general term for works by Tim Powers (author of The Anubis Gates, 1983), James Blaylock (Homunculus, 1986) himself (Morlock Night, 1979 and Infernal Devices, 1987) that took place in a century 19 (usually Victorian) Farm and imitated conventions of actual Victorian fiction speculative and HG Wells, The Time Machine. Steampunk was influenced by and often adopts style of 19th century scientific romances of Jules Verne, HG Wells, Mark Twain and Mary Shelley. Rudyard Kipling "With the night mail: a history of year on year 2000 "and" easy walking "could easily be considered steampunk.

In general, this category includes any recent science fiction that takes place in a recognizable historical period (sometimes an alternate-history version of a real historical period), where industrial revolution has already begun but electricity is still not widespread, with an emphasis on gadgets with steam or spring for propulsion. The configuration most common historical steampunk Victorian and Edwardian eras, though some in this "Victorian steampunk" category can range from the beginning of the industrial revolution. Some examples of this type include the novel The Difference Engine, the comic book series League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the animated film Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and the role of Space: 1889. The Anubis Gates Tim Powers implies cabal of wizards among beggars and thieves in the slums of the early 19th century London.

Fantasy World

Among the subgenres of history and steampunk fantasy is a type that occurs in a hypothetical future or a fantasy equivalent of our future where steampunk-style technology and aesthetics have mastered. Examples include turning an animated series Gundam (1999-2000), Hayao Miyazaki post-apocalyptic anime Future Boy Conan (1978), Philip Reeve Mortal quartet Motors and Disney's Treasure Planet (2002).

John Clute and John Grant have introduced another category: gaslight romance. According to them, "steampunk stories are most often in a romantic, smoky, Century 19 in London as Gaslight Romances. Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by amateurs in a pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style. Examples of items include computer keyboards and electric guitars. The purpose of the renovation is to use appropriate materials (eg polished brass, iron, wood) with design elements and workmanship according to the Victorian era.

The group of artists Kinetic Steam Works submitted a steam engine working the Burning Man festival in 2006 and 2007. founding member, Sean Orlando, also created a Steampunk Tree House, which was sent to a number festival.

Culture
